Vilsund Muslinge Industri Supports Cancer Research
Vilsund Muslinge Industri provides mussels to a research project on Mors, which will map the effect of shellfish on the body´s defense against cancer:
A three year long research project based on the island of Mors will be able to help ascertain whether an increased intake of shellfish – as the scientists presume – will be able to strengthen the body´s natural defenses against cancer. The Danish Cancer Society has composed the research project, which is financed by foundations and has a budget of approximately 5 million kroner over the next three years. The project will be done by researchers with connection to the University hospital of Århus/Hospital of Aalborg, the Danish Cancer Society and the Technical University of Denmark – but based in the Danish Shellfish Center in Nykøbing Mors.
Selenium Supports the Body´s Defense against Cancer
The research project about the influence of selenium on cancer takes is based on a new American research project which shows that the content of the micronutrient selenium in the body has a direct influence on the individual´s risk of developing and dying of cancer. Especially when it comes to lung cancer and prostate cancer there seems to be a direct connection. The selenium level of Danes are very low compared to e.g. the American population, and the project on Mors will among other things establish, if an increased intake of foods with selenium can have a positive effect on the risk of developing cancer. Mussels and oysters are among the kinds of food that have the highest content of selenium, and experiments on Mors are going to help establish, how large amounts of these kinds of food it can be recommended to consume in order to strengthen one´s natural defenses against cancer in the best way.
